The Alen AMS09 Mini-split A/C seem so be a nice and well made unit. It is quiet, easy to install, and pumps out plenty of cold air. When I purchased this unit a month ago, Alen had the best price on the internet for a mini-split and I assume that at the time of writing this review that they still do. In automatic mode the A/C maintains temperature with is built in thermostat and typically runs the indoor unit fan so slowly that you can barely even tell that the A/C is on. However even with the fan on high and the outdoor unit running, this A/C is still a good bit quieter than the typical window A/C and it definitely looks a lot nicer.
The AMS09 ships with a pair of insulated copper lines about 16 feet long as well as 16 feet of interconnect cable to wire between the indoor and outdoor units. Its install kit has everything you need for installation except for the condensate line and the electrical disconnect box for the outdoor unit. Both these items can be easily purchased at Home Depot or Lowes, but personally I think that Alen should at least include the condensate line in the install kit.
I mentioned above that installation was easy, but I should point out a couple of things. One can certainly do the entire install themselves, however as with all mini-split A/Cs, the AMS09 requires a dedicated 120V circuit. Also, as with all split system A/Cs, the AMS09 will need to be pumped down to get air and moisture out of the refrigerant lines. So unless you happen to have a vacuum pump and a set of A/C gauges, you will probably still need an A/C professional to assist with your install. My neighbor is an A/C tech so he took care of this part for me. An important note for any do-it-yourselfers out there: My refrigerant lines had what appeared to be rubber gaskets at each end. However these are NOT gaskets, they are shipping plugs and must be removed before install. Also, be sure to tighten your fittings well, or you may wind up with a leak.
My only real complaint about this A/C is that that the temperature display on the remote is ONLY in Celsius. Although we probably should be using the metric system, the fact is in America we don't so one tends to expect a product to display temperature in Fahrenheit. I would have given the AMS09 5 stars if not for this little snafu. This is certainly not a deal breaker and I would certainly recommend this product to anyone looking for a nice mini-split A/C.
